Douglas Haw

Background:

Mr. Haw began skating in Ontario, Canada and trained at the exclusive Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club and the prestigious Granite Club.  He competed in four National Championships.  After seven years of judging to the Gold test level, Mr. Haw began his coaching career in 1980.  In 1983 he graduated with High Honors on the Dean’s List from Seneca College in Toronto with a diploma in Coaching Techniques.

Experience:

Mr. Haw has coached athletes from the grassroots to the Jr. World, World and Olympic level in both Canada and the United States. He was the professional coach to World Champions Brian Orser (1990-2002) and to Kurt Browning (2010-2013).  He was the Director of Skating at the Haw Training Center (1986-89), Toronto Cricket Skating & Curling Club (1990-2001), Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club (2001-2004) and the Granite Club of Toronto (2009-2013).  With a keen interest in hockey skills he directed and co-owned “Strictly Skating” power skating camp from 1990-2001.  With the world’s leading coach, Brian Orser, Mr. Haw operates The Skating Camp in Canada each summer since 2011 (set to resume in 2022 post Covid). Our camp is home to World and Olympic Champions with skaters from over fifteen countries!

Mr. Haw is a well-known educator worldwide teaching seminars in United States, Canada and Mexico.  As an author he has written and published articles on Jump Technique, Spin Technique and Biomechanics. As a presenter for the PSA, Mr. Haw has presented at multiple PSA World Conferences, five PSA Nationwide Seminars,  two PSA Prep and a Webinar on How to Draw Jumps! In the fall of 2020 the PSA launched the Foundations of Coaching Course and Mr. Haw was on the faculty. He was also a member of the team to develop the Moves in the Field test structure.  As the Moves in the Field Chair on the PSA Ratings Committee, he has just re-written the MIF Rating Exams. 

Currently Mr. Haw is on the Board of Trustees of the Ice Theatre of New York and the Board of Directors of the Professional Skaters Association (PSA).  He is strongly devoted to his volunteerism to improve the sport of figure skating in all facets of the sport.

With a wealth of knowledge, a strong foundation of teaching techniques and a true passion for the figure skating, Mr. Haw brings a well-rounded perspective to the sport.  He has demonstrated a keen interest to learn, to try new things, to have fun, to impart knowledge, and to build and cultivate relationships.

His innate ability to coach, consult and educate are sure to bring success to any skater, coach and organization.
