Hockettes Synchronized Skating Teams

The Hockettes are proud to be the Nation’s First Synchronized Skating Team. Precision Skating, as it was then called, was founded in 1956 by Dr. Richard Porter. The Hockettes began as an exhibition team performing between periods at The University of Michigan hockey games as well as at Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club ice shows. As awareness of the team grew within the skating community, more teams were formed and the sport of synchronized (“precision”) skating was born. U.S. Figure Skating held the first National Synchronized Skating Championships in 1984 and the first World Synchronized Skating Championships were held in 2000. We are beyond proud to carry on Dr. Porter’s legacy.

Synchronized Skating

Synchronized Skating is a sport for figure skaters which combines the disciplines of freestyle, ice dance and pairs skating, while performing as a team. Composed of 8-20 skaters, teams move in unison at high speeds forming shapes, such as rotating wheels, circles, and difficult intersection movements. Skaters are required to jump, spin and lift just as in pairs, ice dance and freestyle. Synchro, in short, is the ultimate team sport!

Hockettes has opportunities for all ages and levels of skaters.
